A private day care centre runs roughly office hours. A typical day includes:

PAWE, Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas, are free activity centres for Malaysians aged 60 and above, run under JKM. They are excellent for what they are: exercise, classes and social life for independent seniors. They are not care centres. What it costs

Private day care fees are set by each centre and vary with days per week, transport and meals. The reliable anchor: day care generally costs below the RM800-2,400 per month of a part-time home caregiver, because one centre’s staff serves many seniors at once instead of one caregiver serving one person. Who day care suits, and who it does not

Day care fits when your parent:

• Is mobile, or manages with a walker and light assistance
• Has mild dementia that benefits from routine and company, without wandering risk beyond what staff can manage
• Should not be alone all day, but is fine with family in the evenings and on weekends
• Is recovering strength after illness and needs a supervised, active routine

Choosing a centre

Visit during operating hours and watch a normal day: are the seniors engaged or parked in front of a television? Is the place clean and smell-free? What is the staff-to-senior ratio, and who handles a medical emergency? Ask about transport. Many centres offer pickup, which decides whether the arrangement is practical for a working family at all.
